6" Tasker Little Giant Steam Tractor

A recent business venture between PNP Railways & Bailey Steam is to present the Tasker for sale as a set of castings & drawings. At present the prototype that Paul purchased from Station road steam is now in the workshops to be completed. This will be the first model to this design & patterns. This first example will be used as the demonstration model for this engine.

Flywheel Dia, 16.5"
Cylinder bore, 3-3/8"
Cylinder Stroke, 4.5"
Height, 60"
Boiler, Welded Steel
Front Wheel dia, 21-1/2"
Working pressure 120 PSI
Rear Wheel dia, 28-1/2"
Weight approximate 15 cwt
Width, 30.5"
Top of Tender, 28"
1st Gear speed, later
2nd Gear speed, later

Based on tractor No. 1365, a single cylinder, 5 Ton "A2" type built in 1907

This well proportioned model offers the opportunity to own a 6" scale engine that can be transported on a trailer behind a car. It is large and strong enough to allow a heavy driver to sit on the rear of the tender with out the fear of the front wheels lifting. The height of the tender makes it easy to sit on and off the engine.

This is a true scale model detailed from Original Tasker works drawings obtained from the Tasker collection. These drawings were supplied courtesy of the Hampshire County Council Archive services. Further engineering details are taken from A2 convertible, Engine number 1715 built in 1916 as a Steam Tractor and from the excellant 4" scale drawings with kind permission of Mr D.A. Kilburn. A CD-ROM containing over 200 Digital photographs of the only surviving A2 Little Giant (Convertible) will be available as part of the drawings package.

At last we have made a start to complete the Tasker!

Diff Casting set for the Tasker Differential

Pre-machined Final drive, fabricated winch drum and retaining ring flame cut

Pinnions machined & fitted, bevels turned, now a little work is required to fit it together, cut the key slot and bore the drive pin holes. The flame cut blank in the previousl photo will be machined in to a retaining ring for the winch drum.

Trial fitting of the Diff and winch drum assembly!

Winch drum complete with Locking catch

6" Tasker Diff, 12" Ruston Diff, both similar size engines in Full Size

Lasercut end plate and strip, tack weld one end first, strip on the outside!

Continue pulling the strip around, tackwelding 1/2" long at 1" spacing

Weld down hand on top edge, this fuses the two parts together, the top outer corner sags as you weld producing a natural radii

Dress clean with and angle grinder and sanding disc to compete, I always witness file the weld all over using a mill file to make sure it is correct!

The Case sides have a strip of metal added to them to complete the case. I pre-drill the holes in the sheet, de-burr then position carefully, then drill two holes. I then attach the wrapper with small nuts and bolts. Check the alignment here. Adjust by filling the bolt holes to make the wrapper parrallel to the case. Tighten securely. Then drill and start riviting, Several holes can be drilled in one go, but allow the wrapper sheet to move after each rivet is added to prevent stress build up, this can cause the wrapper to rise between the rivets!
